Getting started, common questions, Custom API, and compatibility
Start with a featured character, or import a SillyTavern PNG / JSON card. Official models cover mainstream large language models such as GPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and DeepSeek.
The home screen is the character list. Tap + to create, or Import to load a card.
The same product on all three: account, characters, World Info, Personas, and presets. Web opens instantly and supports drag-and-drop import; the apps are better for notifications and staying in the background.
Same account across devices — creative assets (characters / lorebooks / personas / presets) and subscription state follow the account. Chats stay on the current device by default and can be exported, then imported elsewhere.
Switch Persona in chat settings, or bind a different World Info.
Character cards PNG / JSON, World Info JSON, presets JSON, Persona JSON. Duplicates get a copy suffix.
No. PocketTavern is an independently built multi-device client that speaks common ST file formats. It does not include the desktop plugin ecosystem.
ST’s World Info is standard JSON — just import. You can keep it global, or embed it into a card.
A Custom API is an endpoint and key you configure. Requests go from this device to the provider you set, and do not pass through PocketTavern’s official-model channel.
Custom API is a Pro feature. The Standard plan can use official models. After you subscribe to Pro, add and enable a Custom API in Settings.
OpenAI-compatible endpoints (including reverse proxies), Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, and local Ollama. Enter a Base URL and key that match the protocol.
Go to Settings → Models → Custom API → Add. Choose the provider type, enter the Base URL and key, save, then run a connection test before using it in chat.
In on-device secure storage. We do not upload or host the key, and we cannot see Custom API request bodies.
No. Official models settle in points. Custom API usage is billed by the provider you connect.
Official models work out of the box, spend points, and follow each vendor’s content policy. A Custom API uses your own channel and quota. Keys and traffic do not pass through our official-model pipe; content policy follows the provider you connect.
Open Settings → Models → the Custom API entry → Test connection. Use it in chat only after it succeeds. If it fails, check the Base URL, key, and network.
The address must end in /v1 and speak an OpenAI-compatible format. Certificates, CORS, and upstream quota are yours to maintain.
Browsers enforce CORS. Start Ollama with OLLAMA_ORIGINS=* (or https://app.pockettavern.com) or the Web app cannot reach local port 11434. The iOS and Android apps are not affected.
Yes. Custom API keys do not travel with card packs. Add them again under Models → Custom API → Add. For security, this is the only information that must be entered again.
You settle directly with the provider under its pricing and refund rules. PocketTavern does not collect that fee and does not spend points.
Check that the key is valid, the Base URL is complete, a reverse proxy ends in /v1, and outbound traffic is not blocked. On Web, also confirm CORS when connecting to a local service.
Custom API output follows the provider you connect. Refusals, suspensions, or billing disputes are handled with that provider.
Official-model usage is settled in points based on the request. Actual usage depends on the model and context length.
No. Daily grants last until spent. Cancelling Pro does not wipe your balance.
30 points per day. Standard is 10 points per day. Both apply to official-model usage.
Conversations stay on the device by default. Official-model requests go to the provider; a Custom API uses the endpoint you configure.
Yes. Settings → Export all data outputs a JSON bundle: characters, World Info, Persona, presets, chat history.
30-day grace period. After that account data is removed from our servers.
Check the format: PNG needs SillyTavern metadata; JSON should match v1/v2 card spec. Re-export from desktop ST if unsure.
Lower Max Tokens in the preset, disable unused World Info entries, or switch to a lower-consumption official model. Custom API usage follows your provider’s bill.
